Description
A fire hose reel is a drum-mounted first-response hose system that provides occupants with immediate firefighting capability inside buildings. The reel carries a 25 mm rubber-lined hose (typically 30 m in Indian installations) on a swivel drum with an integral shut-off valve and a brass/gunmetal nozzle for controlled discharge.
Hose reels are usually wall-mounted along exit corridors or stair lobbies so that the hose can reach most areas on a floor. NBC 2016 recommends hose reel coverage for high-rise and high-occupancy buildings, and IS 884 specifies materials and performance. Reels are intended for small, early-stage fires or for use while the main hydrant system is being charged.
Typical assemblies include an aluminum alloy drum with a steel bracket to resist corrosion, and the hose itself is rubber-lined per IS 4444. During commissioning, the assembly is pressure-tested to at least 1.5× working pressure to ensure safety and leak-free operation.
