Non-Return Valve (Check Valve)

Non-return valves (check valves) allow flow in one direction only, preventing backflow that could damage pumps or drain suction lines. They are installed on pump discharge lines, suction lines, and fire brigade inlets to keep the system stable and primed.

Common types include swing checks, spring-loaded checks, and foot valves with strainers. Proper selection avoids water hammer and ensures the pump does not spin backward when multiple pumps share a header.

During annual testing, technicians verify that the valve seats properly and does not chatter under fluctuating pressure.
