Description
The tamper-evident seal is the first line of audit defence for every portable fire extinguisher. It is a single-use, break-on-removal nylon tag that locks through the safety-pin pull ring. Its sole purpose is to provide visual proof that the extinguisher has not been operated, tampered with, or had its pin removed since the last authorised service. During a fire-safety walk-down, a missing or broken seal is an immediate investigation trigger: was the unit discharged? Was the pin pulled by vandals? Was it serviced without proper documentation?
Unlike generic cable ties—which can be cut and replaced with identical-looking ties—purpose-made tamper seals incorporate a frangible break point moulded into the body. Once the seal is broken, it cannot be rejoined, re-threaded, or disguised. This tamper-evident feature is what separates a compliance-grade seal from a hardware-store zip tie. Auditors and insurance inspectors specifically check for this frangible construction during facility reviews.
Colour coding adds a powerful time-based tracking dimension. Most fire-safety operations assign a specific colour to each calendar year (e.g., red for 2025, blue for 2026, green for 2027). During monthly inspections, the inspector can instantly identify which extinguishers were serviced in the current cycle and which carry outdated seals from prior years—without reading fine print on a service tag. Some organisations extend the colour scheme to months or quarters for higher-frequency rotation tracking.
Installation is simple: thread the seal through the safety-pin pull ring and the valve handle eye, then push the locking barb into the receiver until it clicks. A firm tug should confirm the lock is engaged. Record the seal colour and serial number (if serialised) on the monthly inspection tag and in the fire-safety logbook.
Bulk packaging (bags of 100–500 seals per colour) keeps per-unit cost negligible—typically less than ₹2–₹5 per seal. Given the cost, there is no justification for reusing seals or substituting generic cable ties. Always carry a multi-colour assortment in the field service kit to match the current year and site-specific colour rotation.
Storage is non-critical: nylon seals are UV-stable and moisture-resistant. Store them in labelled bags by colour in the workshop or service van. Shelf life is effectively unlimited under normal conditions.
